After upgrade to Office 2k3 - files "unavailable"

After a recent upgrade from Office 2K to Office 2K3, I am
now unable to open previously created or even recently
created documents.

With Word, the document is "unavailable". When I exit
Word, I am prompted to save the default template
normal.dot - even if the save option is deselected.

With Excel, the document cannot be opened because "my
virus scanner has detected a problem with the file". I
am using Symantec Antivirus Corp. v8.1x and have scanned
the document without incident. I even removed the SAV
program, and I still have this error.

My guess is that security permissions have been
corrupted. Unless I hear differently, I will have to
reload the system.

Any other experiences out there? I hate to reload and
duplicate the same experience.
