Align header text to outside of page?

Alan Kempster

Hi,

I see I can align a page number to the outside edge of
each page (using Insert\Page Numbers) in Word 2002. Is it
possible to also add the current chapter title (not
chapter number) in the same place, next to the page
number? I can't figure out what makes the page number
align to the outside (or inside) edge - this parameter
appears (to a beginner) to be unique to the page number
field.

Thanks.

Most anything is possible, but the secret is not to use Insert | Page
Number. Instead, go to View | Headers/Footers. Then you can type directly
into the header or footer, and the H/F toolbar gives you the necessary icons
to insert page number or certain AutoText. I believe a center and right tab
are already set, but of course you can also modify those. (if you already
inserted numbers via Insert | Page Number, go ahead and delete it and
reenter it from the toolbar. That method puts the number in a frame, which
can get in your way later).

Instead of typing in the chapter title, though, you can use a StyleRef
field, which set up properly, will always pull the proper title even as the
chapters change.

Dayo has given you most of what you need. The last piece is the "Different
odd and even" setting on the Layout tab of Page Setup. This will give you
separate headers for the odd and even pages, so that you can align your text
to the outside using paragraph alignment or the built-in tab stops.
