Aligning objects

If I position Object#1 on a page and want to align another object(s) to it,
how can I lock Object#1 so that the other object(s) align to Object#1? Many
times, all of the objects will align to each other but they will ALL move -
even Object#1. I can't seem to find a way to make Object#1 stay put.

I always thought that all objects would align to the first object selected,
but that doesn't seem to work.

Any thoughts.....?

Hi Chuck,

In Word 2003 when I'm inserting autoshapes, textboxes or pictures, I
usually make sure that on the Drawing Toolbar, after clicking the Draw
button, that both boxes "Snap objects to grid" and "Snap objects to
other objects" are both checkmarked.

My original object doesn't seem to move when I do this, unless I move
it myself.

I wish you luck with this!

If I've used the Alignment Tool, to get them aligned and then want to
move individual objects once again, I deselect them separately and move
them without it affecting the others.

It seems to me that the rules about aligning multiple objects to one
another are

Aligning LEFT, the objects all align to the object that is the most at
left, regardless of whether it is selected first or not. Therefore, one
should make sure one object is alredy in the correct spot on the left
side.

Aligning RIGHT, the objects all align to the object that is the most at
right, regardless of whether it is selected first or not. Therefore one
should make sure one object is already in the correct spot.

Aligning CENTER, seems to move them the most, possibly moved to a spot
that is halfway between the boundaries of the leftmost and rightmost
objects.
