Alignment - Menu Options

Why, when choosing a language - In my case U.K.English - is one stuck with
U.S. spelling e.g. 'center' instead of 'centre' when formatting alignment in
such programs as Excel? I imagine you use the correct word in other
languages. The Office program suite is XP.
