Alignment

Hello,

When I use the fully justify icon in a paragraph,
sometimes the last line in the paragraph has so few words
that there is a large space between words. Is there a way
to left align only the last line in a paragraph ? If not,
what method do I use to bring the words of the last line
together with only one (1) space between words ?

Thanks, Joan

Hi Joan

The last line of a justified paragraph is never justified, unless you've
done something unusual to it. Turn on the nonprinting characters (click the
¶ button on the toolbar) and look at the end of that line. If it has a line
break (a left-pointing arrow with a hooked tail) or some nonbreaking spaces
(little circles) or something else, delete those characters. Click the ¶
button again to turn off the nonprinting display.

You don't say what version of Word you are using. The default behaviour for
Word 2000 e.g. is not to justify the last line of a paragraph. The user must
specifiy if he wants the last(short) line justified by putting the insertion
point at the end of the line and pressing Shift+Enter. This is not a toggle,
i.e. it doesn't work the other way round.

Well what you need to is simply highlight just the last
line and do a left alignment on it.

Alignment is a paragraph property; it's not possible to align a single line
differently from the rest of the paragraph. But that doesn't change the fact
that the last line of a justified paragraph is never justified. There is
another explanation, as has been presented earlier in this thread.
