All .doc files changed to Word Viewer

This morning when the office mgr logged onto her computer
all of her Word documents have been changed to open in
Word Viewer. The icon displayed is not the normal icon
used for Word but is a "W" with spectacles in front. If
she tries to open by clicking on an icon it opens in
viewer and is displaoyed as what appears to be code. She
can open Word first, then use normal file opening from
the menu and the document will open normally. It seems
as though somehow a setting has been changed to apply
universally to cause all .doc files to be opened with
Word Viewer. We don't have an IT person and no one knows
how to fix this. Any help out there?
