All documents opened within Word 2000 open as read only

I don't know why this is happening but all documents opened within Word
2000 open as read only. If I go through windows explorer and open the
document it opens fine. I'm using Windows XP SP2, Office 2000 and
files are stored on a Windows 2000 file server. Help!!

What happens if you open Word in Safe Mode first and then open a document?
From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. this opens Word in Safe Mode. Can you open a document now?
