All files suddenly read only

I am using Microsoft Office 97 Word and have been for
some time. I have it installed on my Laptop and on my
Desktop. I recently ran the program on my desktop while
I was traveling, opening files from my RW drive disk.
When I came back to my desktop in retrieve files from my
RW drive disk, they were all marked read-only--but I
didn't designate them read-only at any time on either
computer.

I have tried to save changes to these files by going
through "My computer" and unchecking these files in the
read-only box and have tired saving them to the RW disk
with a new name. Nothing works. I can't even save newly
created files to the disk or a newly formated one any
more. I can save to a floppy or to hard drive.

Anybody know what happened or how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks, Phyllis

I'm assuming that you saved the files directly from Word to the CD(?)
First piece of advice (from a non-expert), don't. Always save to the HD
then copy to the CD (or floppy) and vv.
Have you tried copying the files to the HD and then de-selecting the
"Read Only" attribute on the HD copy?
I've found that any time a file is written to a CD it is always written
as Read Only.

Hope I'm not too far off the mark!
