When I try to use the "file open" menu command on any Microsoft Office
application the application does not respond. I have performed a detect and
repair and installed the lates Office software. I can access the requested
file by finding the file with desktop explorer and clicking on the file.

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

This was a quick easy fix. I was able to run script with MacAfee enabled.
Did not have to disable.
