All new objects appear with a shadow

How do i keep new objects from appearing with a shadow.

Note: it's as if a default has been set. i can use the shadow button to
remove the shadow, but that's not a great solution. I would like

Select on the autoshape, then turn off the shadow.
Next, click on Draw > Set Autoshape Defaults.

Or after turning off the shadow, you can also right click on the autoshape
and click Format Autoshape, then put a checkmark on Default for new objects.
