All office products receive errors at launch

My copy of Office 2003, launches then gets an error, which it wants to report
to Microsoft---tries to recover a blank, new item...then closes. It was
working fine for 2 years and now it is useless.... It does not display any
error, so dunno what I am fixing. I did download all the updates, but to no
avail.

I don't have CDs as this was installed by my son's college ( it is his old
laptop).

Do the errors still occur if you start the applications in Safe Mode? Hold
the Ctrl while starting, continue to hold Ctrl until prompted to start in
Safe Mode.

If they continue to crash when starting in Safe Mode, then see if the errors
occur when starting Windows in Safe Mode.

They still pop up the recovery box (to send MS an error report), then close.
Hate to be a dummy, but I don't know how to start Windows in Safe mode...so
did not try that.

I will try this tonight (after work)----sorry for the long delay. I actually
took Easter holiday off...

I tried F8, F6, F10---and XP will not go into Safe mode. My suspicion is
that my son's college modified the standard XP function---as F10 gets a
customized boot menu that asks for CD, Lan etc.. none of which helps me. I
am getting the sneaking suspicion that I am toasted.

Note: I did run all the virus scans and was clean---so scratch that thought :(

You can also start Windows in Safe Mode using the following:

- Go to Start/Run and type: msconfig and then click OK
- On the General tab, select the option, Diagnostic Startup
- Restart Windows

After you test to see if the problem still occurs, you need to reverse the
process, but select the option Normal Startup instead. Then restart Windows
again to start normally.

This isn't the idea method, since it requires restarting, but it should
work.
