Allow all features of an Office program to be installed at once.

When Microsoft Office was first installed on my laptop (Oct 1999), it seems
that several features of each of the programs were omitted. Later, when I
would try to use something like Microsoft Equation, I would be asked if I
wanted to install it. I did not realize how necessary the Equation feature
would become until recently, when I changed careers and became a high school
teacher.

It's very annoying to not have the features when I need them. I cannot find
my original CD, and I don't have time to turn the house upside down to find
it. I have been through a couple of moves since buying the laptop, which is
why I cannot find the CD.

I have a relatively new Dell desktop (purchased Oct 2004), and I still have
the CD's for the desktop, but I want to bring my old laptop on a vacation
trip. I need Microsoft Equation on my laptop in order to type up worksheets
for my chemistry and math students during vacation. I can't even buy an
upgrade CD for Word to replace the lost one, because my laptop has Windows 98
SE.

I realize this omission of features is deliberate, in order to discourage
people from passing programs around without paying for them. But I just find
it extremely annoying, and I have never willingly violated the terms of use
of any of my programs.

There isn't an 'omission of features'.
The default or 'standard' installation puts in place the
features considered to be those most commonly used,
as you pointed out, you're looking to use a feature
now that you did not find a need for previously.

Using 'Custom' setup choice allows you to install all
some or only one feature set if that is your preference
and the set of installed features can be changed from
Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel but will
then often need the original installation media.

The CD itself can be copied onto the hard drive and the
installation can be done from there if there is a concern
that the CDs are not going to be available or might become
damaged.

I was referring to an Oct 1999 laptop, not my Oct 2004 desktop. I am going
away on vacation for two weeks, and I need to get some work done, so I am
bringing my old laptop.

My problem has been solved. After rooting around the house for a few hours,
I finally found the box with the Microsoft Office 2000 CD that came with the
1999 laptop. I installed the Equation feature from that CD.

But I would still prefer that all the features had been installed at the
beginning. Sometimes it's a nuisance to have to find the original CD.

Thank you - this is helpful.

I was upset when I first wrote, because I thought the Office 2000 CD might
be permanently lost, and I was going to have difficulty upgrading my old
laptop's software with current software. However, I was able to find the CD
and add the Equation feature to Word on my old laptop. (I found out how much
I liked the Equation feature because I now use it regularly on my new
desktop.)

I have printed your advice for the next time I install software. Thank you
very much.

Not a problem, the user may install as much or as little of the suite as
desired. If one doesn't install all the bells and whistles the first
time, well then you need to add them later when you discover that you
want them.

Word was factory-installed when the 1999 laptop first came, so Dell did the
standard installation. I guess what I would change is that I would make the
full installation the DEFAULT in the factory for someone like me, who tends
to misplace things like program CD's . Hard drives are much bigger now, so a
full installation isn't going to clog up someone's hard drive.

I also remember that I had to order Access 2000 separately for that laptop a
few months later in early 2000, and I tried to do a complete custom
installation with all the features. Yet I still got messages later when I
tried to do certain things, asking me whether I wanted to install a feature
that had not been installed. So I guess I must have missed something when I
was trying to do that custom installation.

I had not previously considered copying everything onto my hard drive, as
Bob Buckland has suggested. Since I have a tendency to misplace things,
copying the CD contents to my hard drive is the way to go on my newer
computer, which has a huge amount of space.
