It occurs that information accidently becomes lost due to clicking "save"
instead of "save as". There should be a feature where you may revert to the
point before your last save.

There is, its called Versions. Click File, Versions. Of course one can't
anticipate every users method of removing data.

Depending on the application and version you are using, even though you
click Save you can still use Undo and reverse your actions. In previous
versions, if you opened the file again, after it was already open and
modified, you were prompted with "Do you want to revert to your previously
saved copy?" but this was removed due to confusion. Users would lose their
file, try opening it again, not know how to answer the message, and would
end up losing their revisions.

If you are trying to prevent modifying a document, then in the Open dialog
box, select the document and under Open, click Open Ready-Only. Or you can
select all files in a folder, display the File Properties and set the file
attribute for the documents as Read-Only. Either of these methods will force
you to use Save As even if you accidentally click Save.

In most versions of Word at least you can do this by turning on Always
create backup copy in Tools/Options/Save. Some other programs may also have
that feature.
