Allow rotation and effects of images in files saved as 2003 .doc

I've had to set my Word options so the default is to save documents in the
..doc format because few people I send documents to have 2007 and I can't ask
everyone to download the add-in to allow them to open the .docx documents.
When I insert a picture in a new document and then save the document, once I
reopen it it has none of the picture effect options. And I created the
document! So, when I'm creating it, I can rotate, bevel, etc., but once I
click save I can no longer do it. Great.
Well, no, it's not.

That's because these features are available only in Word 2007 format.
Previous versions offered a Save Options setting to "Disable features
introduced after...," but I can't find a similar setting for Word 2007
(unless setting Compatibility to Word 2003 would accomplish the same thing).
If there were one, then you would not be able to apply these effects in the
first place.
