alt-i goes missing in Office programs

(Using Office XP.) For the second time alt-i has stopped working in Office
programs. All the other alt combinations work but alt-i doesn't. To get it
to work I have to press alt (either one) then the "I" key. If I press alt+i
simultaneously they don't work. This behavior happens only in Office
programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). It doesn't happen in other programs.
(Like Outlook Express: I just pressed alt-i while composing this sentence
and the "Insert" menu worked properly.) I don't recall how I fixed it last
time but I did. This time nothing I do seems to be able to correct this
behavior.

What could the problem be and how do I fix it?

Seems like an awkward keystroke for something that I can do by just
clicking on the Insert menu item but if it makes you happy...

When translating my hands mustn't leave the keyboard. Using the mouse just
slows me down.

Did you check for Sticky Keys? Control Panel - Accessibility options

That was the first place I looked. No joy. (Sticky keys is turned off.) But
when you mentioned that I suddenly remembered how I fixed the problem the
last time: I tapped the left-shift key rapidly five times and now alt-i is
working in my Office programs again.

Go figure...

Thanks for jogging my memory.

Glad I could help....okay, I didn't really help but you're up and running
again so I'm happy.
