Altered highlight behavior after XP upgrade

In Word2002, the line is also selected if you click to the right of the text
(even a little bit to the right... not only in the right margin).

Klaus:

I jumped from Word 2000 to XP and don't recall that behavior. I was always
able to click anywhere to the right and get to the last character on the
line.

Regardless, the fact that the cursor gets stuck there is indicative of a
real problem.

This sounds more and more like a graphics driver conflict now. Try
downloading the newest CERTIFIED (WHQL) driver and installing it.

Terry:

Not sure what CERTIFIED (WHQL) means. I have the very latest NVidia drivers
for my specific card.

Incidentally (for Klaus): Just cranked up my Windows ME machine with Word
2000: Clicking anywhere in the white space right of any line puts the cursor
on the last character on the line. I'm certain this is was the case with
Office XP under XP Home as well.

I have been following this thread with interest and from what has gone
before may I make the following observations:

1. If you click in the white space to the RIGHT of the text, the cursor
should drop at the end of the nearest line to the right of the last
character on the line.
2. If you click in the white space at the LEFT of the line, the cursor
changes to an arrowhead and the adjacent line is selected.
3. Word 2002 introduced Asian language support including writing from right
to left - I wonder if Asian language support is the problem here?
4. Most Word problems are the result of external influences and not the core
program. Do make sure that you rename normal.dot, remove any orphan temp
files, remove any add-ins and backup then delete the registry data key. If
this does not correct the problem, you can always replace the originals.

If that's v 53.03, it is WHQL certified.

Right to left text enabled: that's a good thought.

Correct, and as per Word-Help, but in my case it doesn't. The cursor turns
to an arrow at both the left and right ends of the line (the latter if the
cursor is anywhere beyond the last character.)
2. If you click in the white space at the LEFT of the line, the cursor
changes to an arrowhead and the adjacent line is selected.
Correct.

3. Word 2002 introduced Asian language support including writing from right

I didn't install it, and inserting paragraph right-to-left or left-to-right
marker doesn't change anything.

I did the first two, but I don't think I have add-ins and am reluctant to
fiddle with the registry.

No resemblance to the numbers I have. However: In poking around I think I
might have a problem with those drivers, and should probably get them
straightened out before

Bingo! In my case, support for Arab was responsible. After disabling that in
"Microsoft Office Tools > MS Office XP language settings", the line isn't
selected any more when clicking to the right of some text.

Thanks!

Sounds great...except that the language settings option doesn't appear in my
list of Microsoft Office Tools. I assume that this is because I didn't
install support for other languages, so I don't know how I got stuck with
that behavior. Any ideas on how I can access that setting? Or should I
install language support and then try to turn this thing off?

L

Lee

Partial success.

I installed Language Settings, then disabled Arabic. Now when I click in
white space to the right, the line is not selected, and the cursor moves to
the last character on the line, which is correct.

However, the other problem remains: If I hit END while on a line with a
space at the end, the cursor goes to the end of the line but left-arrow will
not move the cursor. HOME and Ctrl-Back-arrow work, but left-arrow has no
effect.
