Alternate use of proposed resource

I have found that one can switch a resource from committed to proposed, even
if actual hours have been submitted. These actuals are preserved.

Since a project does not appear on a timesheet when a resource is proposed,
I have come up with a couple of ideas to use this feature in an alternative
way.

First, many have asked, how do I close a project out and prevent people from
submitting time. Certainly locked down time periods can minimize this risk
along with dilligence by the PM, but why couldn't the PM switch all of the
resources to proposed after zero'ing out remaining hours? If you can't see
it, you can't report against it?

Also, we have a large organization and have many Administrative projects.
When a resource moves from one group to another in the organization and has
to be placed into a new Administrative project, wouldn't it be clean to
change them to proposed in the old one? Easier than asking the resource to
hide task.

Thoughts?

Greg,

This is an very interesting concept. I would be very interested to hear how
well it works in practice.

If the resource already has been assigned the task, does it appear to be
deleted on the timesheet when the switch occurs?

If I am correct, this is applied at the resource level not the assignment
level so it would apply to the entire project and not help where a specific
task is "completed" and we would prefer that the resources not be able to
charge it anymore. The only solution I have for that so far is process
related - and a rolled up newspaper. Deleting the task does not appear an
option as we would lose the actual hours charged as well.

Dave,

When a resource is proposed, the project does not appear in the resources
timesheet, either All or Current tasks.

Yes, this applies at the project level, per my description of use; closing
out a project to prevent additonal time from being entered or "removing" an
Administrative project from a timesheet when the resource moves to another
area supported by a different Administrative project.

No application at the task level for this feature.

Why not. As long as you're actively managing the loading and you understand
the impact on the proposed bookings dimension in the Analyzer.

Gary,

That's the issue I am trying to resolve, the impact it has on the cube as
well as in the Resource Availability view. I am hoping that actual work,
whether it is for proposed resources or committed resources populates actual
work in the cube whereas I assume that work is only populated for those
resources that are committed. Both scenarios I have described are only
interested in actual work, there is no remaining work in either case.

Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a very large P10 to P11 migration and
our P11 testing capabilities are somewhat limited, otherwise I would try it
myself
