always saves normal.dot when existing word97

When exiting word97, even after just opening then closing
word, you can see in the status bar that normal.dot is
being saved. If you open a wordperfect document and then
close word, a prompt comes up for saving normal.dot. I
don't know the version of WP used as these are sent to us
from companies around the country. I've checked tools,
options, save and prompt to save normal.dot is not
checked. I have tried deleting all of the copies of
normal.dot except for the one under c:\program
files\microsoft office\office. This happens even when
there are no changes made that would change the normal.dot
file.

Is there something I've missed?

I've verified that she doesn't have the stamps.com
internet postage add in (#262167). I'll check her setup to
see if she has any add-ins listed.

I had her check her addins. She has
diamondlabelwriter.dot and legalnt.dot. Her coworker has
these same addins and does not have the problem. I
searched the knowledge base and did not find any issues
with the diamond label writer and teh legalnt template was
written inhouse and used by several employees in her area
and not causing any problems with their word program.

Are there any registry settings that I can check? I can
check most of her registry settings remotely as long as
her pc is connected to our domain.

Is this a case where office 97 should be totally removed
and reinstalled?

Reinstalling rarely helps because it doesn't overwrite Normal.dot or the
Registry or remove add-ins. We generally advise keeping "Prompt to save
Normal.dot" checked because you *want* to know when Normal.dot is being
modified. If you clear this check box, you are giving Word permission to
save without asking. When your user checked her add-ins, did she just check
Tools | Templates and Add-ins, or did she check for COM add-ins as well (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm)?

she has word 97 so the Com addins aren't there. She gets
prompted to save normal.dot when she opens a wordperfect
document and then closes it without making any changes to
the document or items that would affect normal.dot. I
tried giving her a new copy of normal.dot but the problem
persists. She would like to get rid of issue where word
thinks changes have been made to normal when nothing has.
Her coworkers work on the same documents and none of them
get the prompt about normal.dot. I hate to run eraser97
on her pc to clean up the registry after uninstalling as
this has caused problems with other applications in the
past.

I'm checking to see when her area is scheduled to go to
XP. If it isn't too far down the road, I'm hoping she can
live with the annoyance of the extra dialog boxes.
