An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files...

N

nipsnertz

I am using Frontpage 2000 (SP3) to edit a disk based web.
After not having any problems with this web for more than
a year, I recently started getting an error message
whenever I try to import files into the web. The error msg
says "An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web
files... " When I look in the Windows 2000 Event Log I see
an Event ID 1000 - "Received empty response from Microsoft
Frontpage Server Extensions" The Event Log entry is
confusing since this is a disk based web?? I do not have
FP sever extensions on this workstation since I do not
have a web hosting application running.

I get the same error message if I create a new web and try
to import files to the new web so the problem does not
seem to related to any single web. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Frontpage but it did not
help. The only changes that I have made recently are the
installation of Win 2K Service Pack 4 and several Windows
2K security updates. - - Any Help is Appreciated - -

Have you tried the usual cleanups
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
And Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, and MS Office

The exact same thing has happened to me after doing SP4
(W2K) and security updates. However, in my case I
determined that I AM able to Import files under 1Mb in
size. Of course, this does not help with the other files I
still must post to production! Any help would be much
appreciated!

Hello Spencer,

I have here the same problem like you: Problems with files greater
than approx. 1MB.
My system is also here Win2K with SP4 and new newest security updates.
Last checked with SP3 there hasn´t been that problem.
Also we have here WinNT System => There´s no problem!!!

So thats now exactly what I found out:
Importing of files > approx. 1 MB is not possible. The exact file size
just allowed is a little bit below, and depends on the length of the
file name too. I created dummy ASCII-files to check out the following:
Filename Size [bytes] Import possible?
10438311.txt 1048311 Yes
10438312.txt 1048312 no
Dummy-Groesse1048292bytes.txt 1048292 Yes
Dummy-Groesse1048293bytes.txt 1048293 no

Also 2 single allowed files are not possible to import, when tried
together and > ~1MB.

The error message in the event log - application protocol is:
Event ID 1000 -
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions

Also tried new empty local based webs => identical problems

So, how can this be solved? Which update was the critical one?
Hope I helped a little bit to encircle the problem.

Which version of the FP extensions do each of you have running on Windows 2K
Server?

I have the FP2000 extensions with all SPs and security updates under Windows
2K IIS 5 server and can drag and drop a 9.9 MB file into a web with no
problems.

I have the FP2002 extensions with all SPs and security updates under Windows
XP Pro IIS 5.1 and can drag and drop the same 9.9 MB file into a web with no
problems.

Hello Spencer,

I have here the same problem: Import of files with >~1MB is not
possible

System FP2000 V.4.0.2.6625; Win2K SP4 and the newest security updates.

The exact filesize limit is a little bit below 1MB and depends on the
length of the filename, e.g.
Filename size [bytes] Import possible?
10438311.txt 1048311 Yes
10438312.txt 1048312 No
Dummy-Groesse1048292bytes.txt 1048292 Yes
Dummy-Groesse1048293bytes.txt 1048293 No

In the Windows 2000 Application event Log I see an event ID 1000 -
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions

I tried also a new empty local based web site => same problem

Before SP4 and the Security updates all did function well.
With WinNT4.0 there doesn´t exist this problem.
Hope to have encircled the problem a little bit.
So does anybody have suggestions to solve the problem?

Have you installed all of the Office 2000 Service Releases/Updates?

It turns out that it is a problem related to one of the MS HotFixes.
It seems that it puts a hard limit on the size of file you can import, and 50mb was that limit.

To change it Go to to the following in your registry
(backup your registry before any edits!):

HKey_Local_Machine, Software, Microsoft, Shared Tools, Web Server Extensions, All Ports.

Once there, add the following string value:
vti_maxformcontentlength
then assign the value you want in bytes.

Did you restart your PC after the registry fix?
