I just let the Microsoft AutoUpdate do its thing. The only Office app
that changed to 11.3.8 was Word. No change to Entourage that is still
at 11.3.6

I just read the MS Description of the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac
11.3.8 Update dated October 9, 2007

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941809>

and it says NOTHING about changing Word only. It says

=====
The Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.8 Update contains several
improvements to improve security and stability. These include fixes for
vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a
computer's memory by using malicious code.
=====

then goes on to say

=====
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac
- Microsoft Excel 2004 for Mac
- Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional Edition
- Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Standard Edition
- Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student and Teacher Edition
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2004 for Mac
- Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac

Which is why, if you read what I wrote, I referred to "the Readme", not
"a website"...

The readme file says:

Updated Files:
File Version
Microsoft Component Plugin 11.3.8
Microsoft Word 11.3.8

*Every* Office update will apply to the entire list of Office packages
you cite because of the Component plugin, but *most* updates don't apply
to every application.

If you have a standalone Excel 2004 package, the Component Plugin will
be updated, but not, obviously, Word. Updaters use the Component Plugin
version to determine which updates have been applied, rather than
cycling through each of the hundreds of files in each of the multiple
possible package configurations.

Thanks..... I will take a close look at the Read Me in the future
