Microsoft has offered two deals that will enable US and Canadian users to
get a free copy of Office for Mac 2008 for the cost of shipping and handling
($6.99 US/ $10.00 CDN), plus applicable taxes. The Super Suite deal ends
January 14, 2007 so time is running out on this deal that will qualify you
for Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition that's practically
free. The Technology Guarantee program extends to March 31st, 2008.

With so many versions of Office 2008 for Mac from Microsoft it's
enough to make me dizzy.
I presently have Office X for Mac which is no longer supported. It's
used only for routine home use, e-mail, letters, etc., no need for
Exchange or any of the technical stuff.
It looks like there are at least 3 ways to make the switch to Office
2008.
1) Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition for $130.99.
2) Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade for $214.99.
3) Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac for $354.99.
Could someone tell me why my first choice wouldn't be the $130.99
version?

Since you ask: no. ;-)

Actually the list is more like:

* Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Student and Teacher $129.99
* Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade $214.99
* Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition $449.99

Home and Student rather than Student and Teacher. Quite different
eligibility, I understand.

Exactly, Office 2008 for $130
And like I wrote originally, I have no use for Exchange.
So, why would I want to buy Office 2004 for "X" number of dollars
just to get Office 2008 for the shipping and handling charges
when I can go directly to Office 2008 for $130 with free shipping
from Amazon?
Someone tell me the folly in my thinking.

For you this is a good option. For others that need VBA support they might
want both and prior to this having an updated version to work with until the
release.

Many like the option to get the Special Media edition.

I don't know how I did it, but pasting all of the info into the links I made
some mistakes and have now hopefully, cleared them all up. Getting the name,
version, price and ISBN number for the link evidently overloaded my poor ole
brain.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac $354.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Student and Teacher $130.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade $214.99
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition $449.99

And if you are still looking to use the promotions....

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac $309.99
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student & Teacher 129.99
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac upgrade $209.99

If you buy through the blog links, it will help support the site. Everything
on the blog is volunteer and when we need to upgrade the software it comes
out of our pocket. This is an easy way to help us keep updated.

I would be happy to purchase through the blog link and support the
site.
After looking at the charts that are supposed to help people decide
which version of Office 2008 is right for them, a question remains
unanswered
because the Upgrade version isn't included in the chart.
What is the main difference between the "Office 2008 for Mac Home and
Student" edition
and the "Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade" edition except for the price?
What do I get for the extra $84? Why would I consider the Upgrade
version?
Office X is my current version, will switching to Office 2008 for Mac
Home and Student version be difficult?

The chart does show Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade $214.99. Maybe
you've caught my occasional blindness bug. I was looking for how to change
to 24 hr format and for the life of me refused to see it listed in System
Preferences window for Date & Time. I refuse to believe this is old age.
:)

Since you are using Office X, I would buy the Office 2004 Student & Teacher
for $129.99. This will qualify for any of the Office 2008 versions with the
Suite Deal including the Special Media edition. It's a really sweet deal.
Very un-Microsoft like. :)

When you click on this link:Amazon.com: Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac
Student and Teacher: Software: Macintosh
<http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001WN16M/?tag=httpblog.entourage.mvps.org-20>
you will see this note:

Get the Next Version for Free
Buy this Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac software through January 14, 2008,
and you'll be eligible to receive Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special
Media Edition--a $500 value--for the cost of shipping and handling, plus
applicable taxes. See details.

I was going to check the coupon and see Microsoft has loaded it's new web
site and the link to promotions is gone. If you click on the learn more link
it just takes you back to the main page. What a mess.

JR posted this previously:

Also, if you actually look at the promotion coupon, they give you a
choice:

"Step 6: Choose ONE of the following options for fulfillment of your
order:

OPTION ONE: Send me Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition (includes
1 license for business or personal use, also includes Exchange Server
support , additional Automator Actions plus Microsoft Expression Media
for Mac)

OPTION TWO: Send me Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition
(includes 3 licenses for home or non-commercial use only; does NOT
include Exchange Server support or Automator Actions) + Microsoft
Expression Media for Mac"

So the choice is yours, either way.
What is the main difference between the "Office 2008 for Mac Home and
Student" edition
and the "Office 2008 for Mac Upgrade" edition except for the price?
What do I get for the extra $84? Why would I consider the Upgrade
version?

The upgrade always requires you to have the version installed or have the CD
available. This can result in problems in the future if you have removed or
lost your CD.

The difference between Office 2008 standard and Office 2008 Home & Student
is the lack of Exchange and Automator actions.
Office X is my current version, will switching to Office 2008 for Mac
Home and Student version be difficult?

Not unless you have a corrupted database. This will result in problems
updating to any email application even Apple Mail and eventually result in
Entourage X not working.
