Annoying Message on Startup!

D

Dave S.

Hi

I dont know if this will work or what response I'll get
but here goes.

Having recently loaded Office XP 2002 Pro running under
Windows XP Home I get the following message every time I
try to open or close Word:

"Microsoft Visual Basic
The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to
the on-line help or documentation of the host application
to determine how to enable macros"

Clicking on 'OK' makes it go away and I can continue but
a) it is very annoying, b) I cant find anything in the on-
line help and c) I dont really understand what the
message is telling me!

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

Many thanks.

Dont know what I did but I was working my way thru
the 'workaround' seemingly not having much success when
suddenly the message didnt appear any more!

Thanks again.

I'm glad you got it to work, but I hope you did not set Security to
"low", because that would leave Word more vulnerable to macro viruses.

Hi garfield-n-odie,

I noticed you are still using the old web interface. Did you know a
new web interface is available? You'll find additional features such
as marking Helpful posts, be notified of replies to specific threads,
and you can track the number of questions you've answered (those
marked as Answered Questions) and people you have helped.

Additionally as your Answered Question count increases your
contributor level will increase as well. (Bronze, Sliver, Gold). Since
this is relatively new, it was deployed a few weeks ago, so far no one
has been identified with a contributor level but something tells me
you would be one of the first. ;-)

Here's a link you can use to
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx

Also, would you mind providing the link for the interface you are
currently using?

(btw, sorry this is off-topic for this thread but I don't have a real
email address for garfield-n-odie)

It is nice, but it's a shame only a subset of newsgroups is available. For
instance only eight of the 29 Word newsgroups that are accessible through
support.microsoft.com/newsgroups can be viewed. Now this may have been
intentional to consolodate some of the more rarely used groups into broader
categories, but I feel that more groups should be there, eg
m.p.w.customization.menustoolbars, m.p.w.international.features,
m.p.w.spelling.grammar to name but three. Also, it beats me why they direct
'general discussion' to m.p.w.docmanagement.

It is also unfortunate that the Office and Windows newsgroups are kept
completely separate (the Windows groups being at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx).

Once more newsgroups are available this interface will be fantastic.

I think (hope) the plan is to add new newsgroups once the new interface
becomes stabilized. You are not alone in thinking that docmanagement =
General Questions is an odd pairing, but there is actually a (more or less)
rational explanation for that. When the original Web interface was being set
up, the decision was made that every product area should have a NG for
general questions. Since word.general had long since been deprecated on
msnews (though it still apparently thrives on some proxy servers), we didn't
want to get into that can of worms again.

It was suggested that the most reasonable NG for general questions would be
word.newusers. In retrospect, that would probably have been a better choice,
but it was already such a high-traffic NG that we didn't want to increase
the traffic further. Someone (at MS, I guess) suggested word.docmanagement,
and, although the MVPs were not overwhelmingly enthusiastic, it was also
true that many of us were not at all sure any more what docmanagement was
really supposed to be for, so it seemed like the best "throwaway" group to
select. Unfortunately, it now contains a mixture of "beginner" questions and
very sophisticated document management issues.

There are several portals you can use to access the newsgroups. If you
use the Communities/Newsgroups link from the main site (microsoft.com)
the navigation tree will contain newsgroups other than the Office
groups. Also the groups listed in will be updated in the next month or
so to include more of the newsgroups.

I'm not sure if all of the Word ngs will finally be included or not
but we've requested a portal that lists all newsgroups in alpha order
like they appear in OE so they should all be available eventually.

Regarding the m.p.w.docmanagement (General Discussions) ng, Suzanne
provided the reason why docmanagement was selected, but the reason a
selection needed to be made was the need for consistent taxonomy since
the Office 2003 apps link to the newsgroups. You may note most of the
top level groups have a General Discussions and a New Users.

In Word 2003, for example, if you click the Communities link on the
Help task pane you are directed to General Discussions. It wouldn't
make sense if you were directed to another newsgroup. (New Users would
be logical but there was a need to keep a New Users group as well)

Personally, if you are already accustomed to using OE to access the
newsgroups then I wouldn't change - I'm not. ;-) Although I do use it
here and there so I can keep up on it and see if the features are
being implemented such as the Helpful posts, Answered Questions, etc.
and if there are any issues which were not caught previously.

The web interface does have some great new features but I'll admit I
prefer my standard newsreader. However for those already using the web
interface on the MS site to access the newsgroups it has several
advantages over the previous versions.
