Another Word Crashing problem

Hi,

After adding more memory and fixing permissions and de-installing and re-installing Word as per advice from MS tech person, Word is still crashing many times while I'm in the middle of working. (Not on launch as some others have reported.)

I also tried to follow the advice of John McGhie of this forum, but I can find no file called "normal" or Normal.dotm as he suggested deleting at

Can anyone suggest anything? The crashes don't seem to be associated with any particular kind of editing-- although I have noticed more frequency in documents that have comments and track changes.

Thanks.

Just talked to a MS technician again. Apparently, any image added to a .doc using the most recent update will cause Word crashes. This includes pdf images, jpgs, images inserted as watermarks, etc. Maybe someone already posted about this, but the workarounds are:

Work in .docx
Work with text only and add images when you are done.

An update is apparently on the way.

Thanks for getting back to us.

Yes, we did know about that one. PDF will send it down every time. Any
other graphics format is safer.

Also: Being very careful with your editing helps! The "boundaries" between
the picture and other components are important. I would never use Tracked
Changes in a complex document: it is far too likely to create this kind of
corruption.

Instead, complete your updating on a COPY of the document, then use Compare
Documents to put your change marking in after the document is finished.

That's another thing the MS Tech should have told you :)

Cheers

Hi there,

I'm sure you are right that pdfs cause more crashes than other formats, but I was using a jpg as a watermark, and the MS tech person confirmed for me that ANY image is potentially a problem. Just FYI.

Ah!! Yes, "any image if it occurs first in a document" is a known bug.

You didn't mention "watermark" before :)

There are a couple of work-arounds you can try:

1) Put a space or other printable character before the image.

2) Move the watermark to the footer.

Either of these may fix it. I actually thought they had fixed that one,
since it's a year or two old by now.

The "PDF bug" is a new one: it causes Word to crash if you insert ANY image
of type PDF in ANY location.

I am afraid whoever designed the graphics side of Word needs to be taken
around the back of the bicycle sheds for a "discussion" on software quality
:)

Hope this helps
