If SP2 refers to SP2 for Windows XP, then yes, the built-in firewall that is
turned on by default can interfere with new mail notifications in an
Exchange environment. What versions of Outlook are you using?

In this case the built-in firewall doesn't interfere because Outlook 2003 is
designed to poll the server if the udp event fail to reach the client. can
you supply any additonal details about will not retrieve? for example, are
you working with pop3, imap, or Exchange.? When Outlook tries to collect
mail, are there any error messages?
