Any way to apply a template to a project AFTER its created?

This is a strange question I know but we're going to be using
Portfolio Server which creates the project in Project Server through a
gateway. Using this method, we can't take advantage of templates.
The initial solution I thought of was to use a macro to build the
schedule once created by Portfolio Server, but it would great to be
able to apply a Project Server template after the fact.

I would imagine that you could achieve this programatically with a server
side event.

Could anyone please give me a kick-start as to the fundamentals of
putting together something like this with a server side event?
