Never seen it here.
Sounds like a corrupt ShellIconCache file to me.

TweakUI will fix it. Run Rebuild Icons from the repair tab.

A couple of things happened......

1) The pages would not load ... you would get a 404 error when you clicked
on the link to that page. The page still had the proper name with an .htm
extension... but somehow it was getting the 404 error......

2) Yes when editing (all of this is on the server) the icon was for word....

3) when you opened the page it would come up in word.... to be assumed I
guess.....

4) and there was all kinds of xml code above the head section.

I was able to save the stuff as a text file.... download it to my local
computer... open FrontPage... click the html tab and paste the code in....
after some clean up of the extraneous stuff ( not all that much really) I
had the pages back after uploading them back to the server.

I'm pretty sure the owner of the site ( he does his own maintenance) somehow
got turned around when he was saving some changes... BUT... I thought I
would ask around and see if this might be a known problem....

anyway... thanks for the reply

If it's just the icon, that's easy to fix with TweekUI...if the files really
turned into .doc files that may be somethin' else.

Thanks Steve... see my response to Rob....
But if it happens again... I'll try the tewakui and see what happens.

If he edits the site via IE, Edit With command, it might be set to use Word and not FP

YES!!!
BUT????

What do you do with those clients that are too cheap to buy a maintenance
plan?
I generally offer 1 hour of training with my initial services. I teach the
very basic, how to log on, how to upload, how to change text, etc. Most
clients get it pretty well but there are always a few that do not!!!

Anyway....... what to do? :)

That is about the only thing I can think of that caused this.
How the edit from ie got changes over to Word I guess is the mystery. It was
set up properly and has been working fine for about 8 months or so.

Yes it would and was.... but not horribly so.
What the file ended up being was just a text file with all the html in
it.... WITH the addition of a lot of "STUFF" ( I'm not really sure what it
was???) . Once the "STUFF" was edited out it was an easy matter of pasting
the html into FrontPage. It took about 2 hours and yes I charged the client
for it!!! :)
