Best way to go is to find someone experienced in managing an event of the
type you propose and have a walkthrough of your event and capture all the
tasks they suggest. Then brainstorm the result with the people who will be
doing the key work and then schedule the result on paper, Excel or Project.

If you start off using someone else's idea of a schedule it an only lead to
surprises and disappointment. There is no substitute for the walkthrough by
subject matter experts!

Thanks Rod. I'm actually fairly experienced with the event in question. I'm
brand new to Project though. I figured that seeing an example of an event
could help me learn how to use Project and get me started on managing this
event using Project.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my original message.

I'd say much the same applies. Unless you get a good example your will
repeat any in built errors and lose the advantages of using Project. Given
your experience I would brainstorm a schedule on a whiteboard then start
building it in Project.

Try not to use any dates for tasks at all except for the project start date
(Project, Project Information) and instead link all tasks. Training also
helps a lot.

Training? :)

I know, training's for wimps, but in Project's case it can really save a lot
more than it costs.
