Anyone know what this means in a doc name: ~$ ?

I've had a couple of my old documents renamed from, say, "resume" to "~$resume". The file seems to have been corrupted, because word can't open it. I've searched everywhere, but can't seem to find any answers. Any advice?

This is a temp file called an Owner file.

When a document is opened an Owner file is created. This holds the
user info of the individual that currently has the document open and
is deleted when the document is closed.

However if an error should occur, such as an IPF, then Word is unable
to delete the Owner file. You may see some stray owner files and they
are safe to delete.

Additionally, if an owner file is present and the document is opened
and if Word finds the Owner file it will present the message, "file is
in use".
