App level Security to restrict Project Cost Information ?

What is the best way to restrict who can view project cost
information? We have Project pro and Server 2002 (will
upgrade to 2003 at some point) and need to track project
costs but limit who can view this information. Is this
best handled by restricting who can view/open a project
from Project Server, or is there another way that might
work?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

The best way to restrict who can see what is to use custom Categories and
Groups in Project Web Access. For example, suppose I have two groups of
project managers, PM1 and PM2, in our organization. The PM1 managers should
see all project information EXCEPT for cost information. The PM2 managers
should see all project information including the cost information. To model
this situation, I would do the following:

1. Modify the My Projects category and remove any cost-related views from
the Projects and Project Center views sections
2. Open the Project Managers group and make sure the My Organization
category is not included (if it is included, remove it)
3. Create a new Category called something like "My Projects with Cost" and
include the cost-related views for the Projects and Project Center views
sections
4. Create a new Group called something like "PM2 Managers", add only the
project managers who should see cost information, and then include the new
"My Projects with Cost" category in this Group

Setting up the environment this way would allow the PM1 managers to see all
Project and Project Center views that do not include cost, and would allow
the PM2 managers to see all Project and Project Center views, including
those containing cost information. This is just an example on how to do it
since I do not know your exact reporting requirements. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the well detailed message Dale! Does this mean
that when folks without permissions to see cost info open
a project from the server, that info will not be viewable,
or does this method only restrict what is viewable within
project web access?

Thanks again and have a great weekend!

This applies only to Project Web Access. You cannot restrict the viewing of
Cost info in the actual Microsoft Project plan. If someone is able to open
the project in Microsoft Project, even though you might have hidden Cost
columns in the project, they can easily "unhide" those hidden columns and
see the information. Hope this helps.
