$ appears in file name and I cant open the file

I was working on a file that contained an outline for a presentation I was doing. I was saving it along the way..pressing SAVE. During the day, I downloaded a read-only version of adobe and I had to reboot my computer get it working. When I tried to restore my word file to work on, the file name had a "$" where the first two letters used to be. I tried to open it and I got an error message saying that Word couldnt access that format. It asked me to insert Word Office CD which I cant find. Have I lost all my work?

Unless you can find and open the original document, yes, you've lost your
work. The file with "~$" at the beginning is not the document, it's an
"owner file" that tells Word that the document is in use. (For more
description, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632.)

Try using Windows search from the Start menu, and look for some word or
phrase that you know was in the document.

In the future, don't leave a Word document open while you reboot. It isn't
safe. Use Alt-Tab to reach Word and shut it down.
