Append query for MS Access 2003 table linked to a Sharepoint listwith lookup fields

I have a MS Access 2003 table linked to a Sharepoint (2.0) list with
lookup fields.

I am able to update the records in the linked table in MS Access
manually, but the append query fails.

When I update the linked table manually, I get in the column which
corresponds to the lookup field a list of values, which I can then
select. These values are user names (i.e. strings), though in the
(read-only) design of the linked table, the columns appears as number.

I haven't been able so far to set the right values (string, number,
combination of both?) in the query
for the column with the lookup fields.

Any help is greatly apprciated.
