Application error when I click on the close button and program disappears on minimize

It seems more often than not that when I click on the 'X' close button in
Word an error message comes up saying "Application error" (and a few other
things below it that I don't understand). Then it doesn't automatically ask
if I want to save. My saved work is lost and I end up having to recover the
document.

Also, this hasn't happened for a while now, it was common that when I
minimized a Word document the document would just disappear.

Has this happened to anyone else, and does anyone know how to fix it?
