Application not responding while formatting numbered order

I am working on a 200 page document with numbered
ordering. I am having a problem when I paste text from
another word document, and then try to format the
numbered ordering. I'll highlight a line, click the
numbering button, and then Word hangs. The icon goes
to "application not responding". This happens every time,
and cannot continue

I haven't tried reinstalling at this point, was wondering
if there are any known fixes to this?

Word 2002. Windows XP Office
Pentium 4, 256 MB

You have found out that Word's numbering is pretty flaky. Take a look at the
FAQ site in my signature block. There are several articles on Word numbering
that should help you sort out your problem.
