Apply existing style to pasted text

In a document with various styles, I want to paste text cut from a
document with a Normal style and I want to retain the styles of the
receiving document. (Word97, Windows98)

I've tried all the tricks I thought I knew, but none seem to work.
Grateful for any and all suggestions.

Use 'Paste Special' (under the Edit menu), choose 'unformatted text' and
click OK.
