Apply new template to existing doc.

If I create a document without a template, is there a way to apply my letterhead template at a later stage and have the headers and footers appear on the document?
I know how to apply a new template, but it does not change the formatting of the original document. (OfficeXP)
Can anyone help?

You can't accomplish this by attaching a template, but you can create a new
document based on the template and use copy/paste or Insert | File to insert
the existing document into it.
