apply slide theme to inserted slides from another presentation

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) I inserted slides from another presentation to my new presentation. For a while I was able to change the inserted slides to the new presentation slide theme by highlighting them, and clicking on the slide theme. But suddenly I get a little icon (looks like an upside down L) and nothing changes. What happened? How can I apply the new slide theme (from the gallery) to my inserted slides? thanks.
