Arabic multi-byte

I have received an Excel file from a translator and am having
trouble reading it. Most of the Arabic displays fine, but there
are box characters in it every once in a while. I am using Office
XP (standard install). I have tried all the usual code set settings
and none seem to work (neither does autodetect). The translator's
husband set up the system for her and I'm having a really difficult
time tracking down how they have Excel configured. Any ideas on
how I can figure out the code set?
