Archive vs Deleted Folder

I have over 2,000 emails in my deleted folder, including unread spam. How do
I reduce the size of this folder without losing access to read deleted
emails. I use Google Desktop to search the folder for old emails that I need
to recall.

What a mess! Open the trash/recycle folder and Move the non-junk
messages to another folder so you can really delete the trash. Next make
a point of actually deleting spam from the trash/recycle folder
regularly, and DON'T delete e-mail if you don't actually want it
deleted, move it to a seperate folder instead.

The deleted folder is not the place to store mail.
Recover the mail you want to keep, then use the Archive options to properly
Archive your mail.
Then delete the trash from the Deleted Folder
NB Archive works on modified date, not received date
