Archiving Projects

a. Does Project Server automatically archive versions of project plans or
will we need to create different version types?
b. Is it possible to overwrite projects without checking them out?

A. Your Project Server would first need to create a separate Version type
called Archive. Once done, you could then open the production project
(.Published), click File - Save As, and save the project as a .Archive
project. You would still need to use your production project for
publishing, collaborating, tracking the schedule, etc.

2. You must open (check out) a project before you can make changes to it.
What situation would you want to do otherwise? I'm not sure I understand
you intent in the original question.

Hope this helps.

Dale,
Thank you for your response - it's pretty much what I figured. There's a
gentleman here that hasn't quite bought into project server or the need to
control projects since he'll be the main PM, scheduler on the server.

If he doesn't buy into Project Server, he represents a real risk to your
rollout, as he could easily sabotage your efforts. Have you considered
using the services of a Project Partner to assist you?

Dale,
Right now we're working out all the kinks and trying to understand all the
limitations and capabilities.

I truly appreciate your guidance though.

You are certainly welcome for the help. I would strongly suggest that if
you cannot allocate the $$$ to hire a Project Partner to assist you, then
you should at least purchase the Project Server 2003 books that we publish.
Click on the URL in my signature block for information on how to order our
books. I believe you will find them a tremendous help and will answer many
of the questions you uncover. Hope this helps.
