Are the "page setup" layout settings overwritten by page preview adjustments ?

I setup a page layout in menu

File->page setup.

As far as I know these settings are stored in the document itself.

Now I call menu

File->page preview

and click on the preview window the button "setup..."

If I change now these settings (again): Are these changes temporary or
are they saved permanently in the document resp. are the old settings
overwritten?

Yes, they are changed. Click on the Margins button in Print Preview
and then widen one of the columns. When you click close and return to
the normal view you will see that the column has been widened in the
sheet, so csome of the changes can affect the sheet as well.

One thing you can't adjust in Print Preview is the print area, or
indeed anything on the Sheet tab of Print Setup.

Hope this helps.

In File Page Layout, if you change the margin and exit the dialog, when you
save the document, the changes are saved with the document.

If you change the margin and press DEFAULT in the dialog, then the changes
are written to the template and will affect all new document based on the
template as well as the document.

I Couldn't find the default button as suggested by Terry, perhaps this is
because I'm using excel 2003. If you are using 2003 You can create a default
template which will store your preferred settings for all future documents.

Open a blank workbook, make your changes to settings as required (e.g., page
size, margins, etc.) and save the workbook as a workbook template (book.xlt)
into the XLSTART directory, usually c:\program files\microsoft office\office
11\xlstart
(You will need to exit excel and start it again in order for the changes to
be picked up). Any new workbooks you create will pick up the settings saved
in this template.
