Area measurement

1) When I reopen a drawing in which I have enabled the perimeter and area
macro I get the message:

Microsoft Visio
Macros in this document are disabled because the security level is high, and
the macros have not been digitally signed or verified as safe. To run the
macros, you can either have them signed or change your security level.

I haven't a clue how to do either

and/or... (preferred method)

2) I have forgotten how to insert a macro (?) of a small hatched square into
a shape which could be expanded to fill the shape and dynamically measure
it's area. IIt's a while since I have needed to do this!

First have a look at what the macros are:
menu Tools -> Macros -> Macros
do they look familiar, are you expecting these macros to be there?

You could first of all set the security to Medium
menu Tools -> Macros -> Security

If you are using Visio 2007 then it's all different (of course)
menu Tools -> Trust Center

However, the perimeter and area shape doesn't use macros, perhaps this
is some other shape?

It sounds like the Building Plan / Space Plan addon?
The Space shape has this capability.
