MS requires that we enter a zip code when Office is
installed... I've moved since installation and need
Outlook to change the default area code for contacts to
my new area code. How do i change this?

First it was zipcode (for postal mail). Then it was area code (for
telephone numbers). So which is it? And MS Office did NOT require a
zip or area code when you installed it. It required a product code (and
moving your computer doesn't change this anymore than your name changes
because you moved 10 feet or 1000 miles from your past location).

My best guess is that you want to change your *dialing* defaults to a
different area code. You don't mention which version of Windows you are
using. In Windows 2000, open the Phone and Modem Options applet in
Control Panel, under the Dialing Rules panel select your dialing
location profile and click Edit, and then change the area code in the
General panel.

Perhaps I could get some help from someone NOT looking to
flame...

Allow me to clarify; I want Outlook to start using my new
area code when I type in a 7 digit phone number into a
contact. If I type in a phone number using only seven
digits, it will tack on the area code from the area I
used to live in and I'd like to change that. Using
Outlook and Win XP.

Have you changed your default dialing location to the new area code? Outlook
uses that to mask your phone number. This MS KB article may help:

Those instructions have you navigate through Outlook's menus until you
eventually get to the dialing rules applet - which is called "Phone and
Modem Options" in Windows 2000 (and is the same name in Windows XP
according to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313808). It
gets you to the same applet albeit through a more convoluted route. You
can also take a more convoluted trip by going into IE's options and
configuring the advanced settings for a dial-up connectoid. There are
probably more routes through other applications, too. I mentioned the
direct route by just opening the dialing rules applet in the first
place. An even more direct route would be to use Start->Run and execute
"telephon.cpl" but that would disconnect the user from learning how it
is normally accessed within the Windows GUI.

So, Dave, tried the dialing rules applet yet ("Phone and Modem
Options")? If so, did it work?

I've always done it through Phone and Modem options. I have no control over
how the KB articles are written nor why they take users through the longer
route.
