Arithmetic sum of subtasks

R

RakeshK

Hi,
Presently the duration of a summary task is NOT the arithmetic sum of the
durations of its subtasks. It is calculated as the difference between the
most end date and the least start date of the subtasks.

How can i show the arithmetic sum of duration of subtasks in a summary tasks ?

Please help.

What you are seeing in Microsoft Project is correct. The Duration of any
summary task is NOT the sum of the Durations of the subtasks. The Duration
of a summary task is calculated from the Start date of the earliest starting
task to the Finish date of the latest finishing task. But if you absolutely
need to calculate a custom Duration as the sum of the subtask Durations, you
would need to create a custom Duration field for this purpose. Hope this
helps.

Is it possble you can show an example of how to use the custom duration
field to calculate the sum ofsubtask durations ?

Thanks.

Hello,

To follow Dale's answer:

Right click on the Duration1 (or other custom Duration field) then click
Customize Fields...
Click formula
Select the field: [Duration]
Calculation for tasks and group summary rows option: Rollup ... Sum
That's all.
But what is the use of such formula? Please tell us.
Thanks

Dale,

Thanks for your reply. It did the work. We want to know the total man days
required to complete the summary task.

For example if you have three subtask under a summary task all starting at
the same time and having the same duration then the summary tasks in project
will only show the diff b/n the start and finish dates. Say the duration of
the three subtasks is 10 days each. Then the duration of the summary task
will be 10 days and the man days required to complete the summary task will
be 30 days.

Best regards,
Abraham

Abraham,

This formula doesn't give the total man days required to complete the
summary task, excepted when all the assignments are one person full time
evenly on each task.
Without any formula, you would have a best result by inserting the Work
column: Insert / Column / Work
You can choose between hours and days to display de work values: Tools /
Options / Schedule / Work is entered in: Days

Hope this helps,

Gerard,

Yes you are right. I forgot to mention that i have not assigned any
resources to the tasks. This will default to then i person full time for each
task as you said.

If you don't have any resources assigned, then in a very real sense you
don't have any man-days to summarize anyway. I see a task that is 3 days
duration. That could be 3 man-days if one person is assigned, 6 man-days if
two are assigned. 9 man-days if three, 1.5 man-days if one resource is on it
50%, and so forth. Summing duration days and arbitrarily calling the sum
"total man-days" is mathematically incorrect and functionally completely
meaningless until you know how many resources are working on each task and
at what level they're working for each duration day.
