Arrange By (Conversation or Subject)

Does anyone subscribe to a Google Group and read the messages in
Entourage?

Do you arrange those messages by Conversation or Subject?

It doesn't work very well because of the way Google Groups prefixes
each subject with [name of group]. So you end up getting one group
with the original message and the replies in another group. Ex:

Original:

[Some Group] Hello Everyone!

Reply:

[Some Group] Re: Hello Everyone!

Because the "Re: " is placed after the prefix, Entourage doesn't see
it as part of the conversation.

Anybody know of a solution to this?

After further reading, I guess not all Google Groups do this.

The admin of the group explicitly sets this option.

I'm still looking for a solution to make entourage correctly group
these.

Entourage doesn't do conversations very well when it's the top sort
selection. I find that grouping by this setup works best for me:

Group items by Subject
Sort groups by Sent Newest on top
Sort items within groups by Conversation A on top
Expanded

Seems I have heard of a script that might strip prefixes, but a quick look
didn't show up anything.

Your best bet might be to use your browser to read those groups.

Grouping by Conversation is intended for Exchange conversations where
users are interacting with Outlook clients. Outside of Exchange it's of
little benefit.

Grouping by Subject is better.

I suggest asking the group moderator to disable the prefix. It does
little to assist users other than for filing messages. That can be
handled just as easily using the group's address.

Hope this helps!

can you explain a little bit more about what the 'conversation' field
means when using MS exchange server? how is this different from
subject in terms of a technical implementation and definition? I am
finding it hard to locate info on this anywhere.

Messages sent through Exchange get a unique message thread number. If
someone changes the subject from

"Re: I have a problem"

to

"Re: I have a problem [SOLVED!]"

then the conversation index will keep those messages grouped together so
they are still viewed as the same "conversation" even though the
subjects are technically different.

Hope this helps!
