Assigning Pooled Resources

My client does both project and application support work. On the application
support side, they would like to treat these resources as a pool. In their
"Application Support" Project in Project Server, they would like to assign
the pool to tasks but allow an individual pool resource to record time
against the task. Project is fairly explicit about only allowing resources
that have tasks assigned to be able to report time against them.

Is is possible to assign the pool but yet have a pool resource record time
against the task? We have thought about assigning all resources in the pool
every time a new task is added. However that presents its own problems
especially if only one pool resource will end up working on the task. The
tasks in this case are small (1 to 40 hours) and they come frequently.

Any experience or options with this would be helpful.

Thanks

Jeff --

There is no default method within Project Server to assign a "pool" of
resources and to then allow one or members of that "pool" to enter actuals.
Project Server does allow you to assign to a task a Generic resource that
represents a group of people, but team members from that group do not see
that task on their timesheets in PWA, so there is no way they can enter
actuals against it. Sorry.

Jeff:

The best way to handle this is to teach users to use the assign myself to a
task feature in PWA.

One of the ways that I get around this, although not ideal, is to get the
team leader of each resource team to 'own' the group account and update the
work on behalf of the resources they represent. This does cause some extra,
but potentially might help?

Hope this helps
