assignment of resources to summary tasks

Unfortunately in Microsoft=E2=80=99s wisdom they allow a user to add resources to s=
ummary tasks or promote tasks with actual to a summary task.

This has some rather erroneous results and very difficult to correct.

Before service pack 2 when the project was re-published it would at least display an a=
mbiguous error, however now it does not!

At this point in time I feel that there is a very high need for a validation system that w=
ill check the data integrity of MS Project.

If any one knows of one I would be very interested.

It's a training issue. Can't fix the product, then train the users!

(a) What I do is "Insert Column" "Summary" on the Enterprise Global.
(b) I tell the PMs to turn on auto-filter and filter on Summary="Yes"
(c) Next, I tell them to look to see if the Summary fields have any
resources on it.
(d) If no, done, publish away.
(e) If yes, get rid of them before you publish!!!

Of course, this is only good as the PMs following directions...

Bob:

It's the price of flexibility. Some people use the summary assignments
approach successfully, although it's definitely a technique for a very
advanced user. We write triggers and macros to do this type of integrity
checking for customers, but these are specific to the business rules of each
organization. Perhaps you could consider doing something similar.

summary tasks or promote tasks with actual to a summary task.

This has some rather erroneous results and very difficult to correct.

Before service pack 2 when the project was re-published it would at least
display an ambiguous error, however now it does not!

At this point in time I feel that there is a very high need for a validation
system that will check the data integrity of MS Project.

If any one knows of one I would be very interested.

Why can't you fix the product?
And what about a validation system?

You should also look at my post titled:

MS Project Server/SQL data validation system

Which implies a major data integrity problem!!!!!!!
