attachment hell - please help

Outlook 2003 working in cached mode against an Exchange 2003 server.
Frequently and for random users when they try to attach a file, it takes
FOREVER once they select the file to attach (outlook just sits there
thinking for a LONG time, sometimes quite literally minutes). These are
files anywhere from 10K to 1MB - doesn't matter. I've switched users to not
using word as their editor to using it, from HTML, to text, to rich text -
nothing seems to alleviate the problem once it exists. I can usually
replicate it with a certain file, but then a few days later that problem
file works fine and other files become problems.

Strange thing is, it never happens to me...

Any and all info on this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Scott

Mcafee virus defense suite, I thought of that and disabled it on some
systems to test, still had the same problem.

hmm... okay this is a wild guess. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;870926&sd=RMVP and
take a peek at the synchronization timings section. Try increasing
upload/download to 60 seconds and set the maximum to 120 seconds.

another thing i would try is taking the client offline and setup a
send/receive group to sync when offline every 5-10 minutes. this should
help isolate the problem to workstation only (eg. something else is causing
the hiccup like a 3rd party addin) or something is going on with comms
between outlook/exchange. (users might be hitting a weird race condition
where comms are dead and outlook 2003 is acting like the days of old where
it is dumb as a stump waiting for a response from the exchange server.
rare, with ol2003, but still possible since we are talking about software
after all.)

only other question i can think of is... does it happen when cached mode is
disabled?

ps - do any of these machines have the ms antispyware beta installed? (i've
found that this program causes some very weird issues for ol2003.)
