Attachment opens in wrong program

After I changed computer and try to open an attachment
(word doc) from an e-mail it uses a wrong program.
(Office XP) I have checked and doc documents are
associated to use Word to open with.
If I save the attachment first, it has no problem opening
the document with Word, but not if I try to open it in
the mail.
Any idea what might be wrong.

It uses Windows picture and fax viewer, but cannot show
anything as it is a text file, and it opens correctly
when I open it after I have saved it first.
I cannot understand the difference from opening directly
from Outlook and opening in explorer

When you rightclick the file from within Explorer and choose Open With...
what applications are mentioned here?
