I have a new HP machine with Vista and Works preloaded. I purchased a copy
of Office Home and Student and installed it myself. I set file associations
such that all Office programs open in Office and not Works (i.e., .xls files
open with Excel, .doc files open with Word). I use Microsoft Mail as my
email program, and when I try to open Excel or Word attachments I get an
error that the file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. However, if I detach the file and double-click on it, it opens
in Word or Excel just fine - the associations are not the problem. It's also
interesting that if I change the associations to use Works instead of Office,
then the attachments in MS Mail work just fine. I thought I might just
uninstall Works and see what happens, but then I won't be able to reload it
since it came preloaded and I don't have the original software.
Does anyone know of a solution for this particular problem? It's kind of a
pain to keep detaching things when I want to open them. Thanks!!
