Attack of the Super-Enlarged Font

Jim

I have a problem with a few Windows Word 97 documents.

These documents contain text that was originally
in "Times" on the Mac but normally converts automatically
to Times New Roman in Windows.

Now when I open the document, it suddenly make the Times
text ultra-enlarged (like 70+ point). There is no way to
select it and make it a normal size again.

A thorough virus scan using the absolute latest McAfee
software does not reveal any viruses.

The problem can also be seen in the style drop-down menu
that shows formatted style names.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the Zoom setting?

Yes.

Just an FYI, I'm not quite a "power user" but have been
using Word for ages. This is definitely some type of file
corruption.

As I mentioned, the problem is even occurring in the style
drop-down menus.

I would still appreciate any ideas anyone can offer.

Thanks.

I think I figured out how to fix this one, but I have no
idea why the problem is occurring. As I mentioned, the
original text had been formatted on the Mac in what was
probably the basic Apple "Times" font.

For some reason, this font was not converting to the basic
Windows TrueType TimesNewRoman but was appearing at some
enormous point size.

Manually selecting all (300+ pages!) of the text and
changing it to TimesNewRoman fixed the problem. Not sure
why I didn't think of that earlier. (But at least my
misdiagnoses led me to finally install virus and firewall
protection!)

Normally this font conversion would take place
automatically. Anyone ever seen this one before?

I am also running ATM, which might be a factor also.

Note that manually selecting 300+ pages is no more difficult than selecting
one word. Press Ctrl+A (Select All) or Ctrl+click in the left margin.
